When using a 35mm system lens with a digital SLR with a sub 35mm size sensor, only the central area of the available image can be recorded. Typically this is about 60%. A wide angle lens is therefore no longer wide angle. To get an idea of the effect, multiply the focal length of the base lens by 1.6. The digital result you get would be the same as if you had used this longer focal length lens on your film camera.
