It is possible to use lenses from 35mm SLR cameras on the Canon XL series of camcorders. They allow full range focus to infinity, but owing to the difference in format size, give an effective magnification of 7.2x on base lens focal length. If you use a 50mm - 35mm format lens, the result you get would be the same as if you had used a 360mm lens on the 35mm camera. You will need to focus manually and set the aperture manually. As a guide, you can set the camera to show an exposure scale in the viewfinder. There will also be a 'lens' sign flashing in the viewfinder to remind you to make all the manual adjustments.
